Day 7- Best dive yet!

mccayman2019

Team 2 (aka Miriam's Minions), started off the day by packing all their gear; Masks, Snorkel, BCD, Regulator, Fins, Dive watch, Tanks, Dive Boots and Weight Belts, getting ready to head off to another amazing dive, this time at 'The Mixing Bowl' dive site; whilst Team 1 (aka Maisy's Mafia) started their day with a danger to coral reefs presentation, in the class room. The divers and snorkelers had an amazing time seeing flying fish from the boat and also admiring the yellow footed boobies who sit on the posts, that indicate to the boat drivers the cut in the reef wall, like guardians of the reef! Once in the water the divers and snorkelers saw: southern stingrays, yellow sting ray, turtles, a nurse shark, French angel fish, many damsel and wrasse. It is always stunning to see many tiny juvenile fish in the crevices of the reef some are only a few millimetres long!

The dive ended with the snorkelers coming up first, having time to have some fun jumping off the front of the boat, waiting for the divers to surface.

Whilst Team 2 were doing their dive. Team 1's presentation highlighted important ways that coral is being damaged or destroyed by extreme methods of fishing, such as: dynamite fishing, net fishing, by-fishing, over fishing, and cyanide fishing. Near the end of the lesson, we played a fun game, using popcorn to represent fish, to help explain over fishing and by-fishing, as well as allowing us to think out the box to develop practical ideas and ways to try and resolve the issues.

Not long after watching the presentation and playing the game, Maisy and Miriam took team 1 on a trip to the North-East side of the island to do another rubbish pick up session. Here we found the most rubbish we had seen yet, and it's safe to say that it wasn't a nice sight to see, knowing that we have probably contributed to some of it.

After lunch both groups switched activities and the day was whole heartedly enjoyed by everyone.

It was a perfect end to a perfect day with a beautiful sunset! (with a few instagram photoshoots going on as well)!
